Clarence Pier and Southsea sea front, circa 1900 - click the image to go to our image gallery of Southsea in years gone by - some great, digitally restored photographs await you!

Russ and Rob Chamberlain intoduced us to one of the longest established wooden doors businesses in the city - McCallums in Highland Road.

Portsmouth University architect Catherine Teeling introduced us to the Creative Urban Regeneration group's work in making local history by helping redesign our seafront.

Charles Burns guided us around the history of Fawcett Road and Joan Clark told of being one of the city's first Schools' Home Liaison Officers, whilst Tony Thatcher waxed lyrical about his beloved Old Portsmouth.

A sight to bring back some memories for a lot of us!
Robin gets chatting to a couple of former school staff members, who were particularly interested in the exhibition.

Retired Portsmouth City bus driver from Anchorage Park, John Brien, got this week's show onto the road with his reliably entertaining recollections of his life behind the wheel from the 1960s onwards.

Then, in addition to our regular weekly features, we met ex-members of staff from that Emsworth school which is the subject of this month's exhibition at the local museum and then went on to hear the experiences of other retired local school teachers Joan Clark of Old Portsmouth and Sylvia Zeffertt of Bedhampton.

We revisited that fabulous new book just published entitiled Tricorn - The Life And Death of a Sixties Icon, when we heard from its young co-author Robert Cook.

Victoria Hall
- by Dave Barber

More about our local schools over the years, with Sylvia Zeffertt, and with Linda Newell introducing a new exhibition concerning a particular school local to Emsworth.

Stella Rutter, also of Emsworth, who on the 26th April last told us of her top secret work on the iconic Spitfire in World War II, introduced us this week to her absorbing autobiography entitled Halt, Who Goes Where?.

The book is priced at £14 plus £2 post and package and can be obtained direct from Candu (spelt CANDU) Computers, Unit 3, 7 The Square, Westborne, PO10 8UE.

Or you can e-mail www.stellarutterpublications@live.co.uk, or phone Candu International - 01243 377561.

Plus all our regular features of course, including a visit - through the memories of Dave Barber - to the old Victoria Hall, and here we have included a sketch drawn by Dave, an impression of a bygone age of entertainment.l

The Tricorn - The Life and Death of a Sixties Icon

Amongst our regular features, we had Dave Barber taking us back again - this time to the Plaza/Gaumont cinema at Bradford Junction in Portsmouth (later the Moderne/Gala Bingo clubs and now a splendid mosque).

Then we had Janice's review of the air raids this past week 68 years ago as recorded in our copy of the Portsmouth Police Daily Analysis Of Air Raids book.

A great old Rock and Roll hit from the 1950s in Mike Orton's Greats From The States series, of now historic recordings and then we had our weekly local history Quiz.

We also enjoyed, with the help of Daley's (St. Theresa's) School champion Margaret Nicholas, along with retired school teacher Sylvia Zeffertt's help, an opportunity to assess how the changing designs over the years of our local schools influenced the value of the education offered in Portsmouth.

There was news of a super new DVD The Lost Cinemas Of Portsmouth, produced by local film maker Peter Flint. To order your copy of this delightful DVD at just £10 (including packing and postage) please telephone Peter on 02392649946.

There's also a fabulous new publication about Portsmouth's famously controversial architectural dichotomy of our times, the book being entitled The Tricorn - The Life and Death of a Sixties Icon - surely, a 'must have' for your bookshelves!

Written by Celia Clark and Robert Cook and designed by Dan Bernard of 131 Design Ltd, the book can be bought for £19.99 plus £4.99 P&P (it's a rather heavy book!).

Order your copy by sending your payment to: Celia Clark, 8 Florence Road, Southsea, PO5 2NE.
