This image is from a little humerous collage I put together, inspired by the frustrations and efforts that go into researching for sites like this - click on it and you can see the full page version, which should make you chuckle ...

Nothing to do with bakeries, nor luxury motor cars - this is a compilation of links, a sort of Portsmouth "Roll Of Merit", for sites whose content is primarily concerned with the history of this great city and the people who have helped make it what it is today.

For all my ambitions and intentions for this site, it has to be said that collecting together so much material, cross-referencing and confirming facts and then getting it in here in a form that people will find enjoyable would have been impossible without the Internet and a great deal more difficult without the prior efforts of many of the people whose sites are featured here.

I will continue to add more sites, as and when I come across them and am trying to "segregate" them, with sites by local historians and enthusiasts in one section and more nationally based sites in another, with a section for the "official" sites of particular local attractions and famous people with connections to Portsmouth in the middle.

Please bear with me in the early stages, as this is a fair old task in itself and I have to admit I haven't yet settled on a final display format that I think will serve our purpose best.

This index is now working, but the page is still in its early stages of construction.
We'll be adding to it constantly over the coming weeks (Editor - 19.08.09)

annoying pop-ups, you may have to hold down the "Ctrl" key when you click the links ...

An excellent site, maintained by Tim Backhouse, with contributions from a group of amateur local historian. New content added regularly.

Stephen Pomeroy can trace his ancestors in Portsmouth back to 1881 and has been working on a super site, which includes details of just about every house in every street - my road, Gladys Avenue, used to be called Muddy Lane, for example!

Tim has written separate histories on different areas of Portsmouth and one for Gosport and also includes a Timeline of Portsmouth in his pages. Lots of facts ...

James is a young local man, who studied history at Portsmouth University. His site is not exclusively about Portsmouth, but there is plenty of good stuff on the local area, nonetheless.

Just about every Portsmouth pub, past and present, is featured in this fantastically interesting and beautifully presented site - bottoms up!

Another site edited by Tim Backhouse - a lot of research and effort has gone into this and we can discover lots of things we never knew about the history of Portsmouth - and some we did

A nice, chronological summary of most of the main events in Portsmouth's history. Not sure how active the site is these days, but the existing material is useful anyway.

A site that covers both the Palmerston Forts Society and its uniformed branch, the Portsdown Artillery Volunteers. The site is excellent - but a visit to the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson is an experience for all ages.

Undoubtedly the biggest and best naval heritage history site in real life and the Historic Dockyard website is a very informative and interesting read in its own right.

Admiral Lord Nelson's famous flagship - the website is pretty good, but a real-life visit to HMS Victory is something you will never forget - quite magical ...

The new museum is coming - we'll be able to see Mary Rose a lot closer up - the whole story of Henry VIII's favourite ship is in the website, but do visit the museum if you get half a chance

The revolutionary Victorian warship - remember she was and is "iron-hulled", not an "iron-clad". Excellent site, brilliant to visit in "real life", too.

Not so much historical as very useful for finding your way around the area, whether you're a local, an ex-pat or a first time visitor to our fantastic city ...

There are many Portsmouth references in the pages of Wikipedia, but this link takes you to the main entry - but always try to validate any facts Wikepedia gives you!
