The constant raids by French pirates during the middle ages means that there is nothing really left of the original 12the and 13th century streets of Old Portsmouth, but this picture of a similarly aged street in Sevenoaks gives us a fair idea of what we might have seen, had we visited the Portsmouth of those days. Fortunately, today's visitors to Portsmouth from France are decidedly more peaceable than their predecessors!
