18.08.09 - Nelson's Column - a close-up of the inscription on the south-facing side of the obelisk..

Close-up of the inscription on the north-facing side of the column. It's amazing that these inscriptions have not worn more. This one reads:
The British Fleet consisted of
Twenty Seven Ships of the Line
of France and Spain Thirty Three
Nineteen of which were taken
or destroyed.

All you need to know about this monument - protected by a plexiglass sheet, this display tells how and when Nelson's Column came to be erected.
If you look closely, you can just about read it all from this picture.
There are a couple of other smaller stones set into the ground around Nelson's Column, but this is the only one
on which you can make out any carving - an anchor, in this case. Unfortunately, there is nothing to indicate its
original purpose, so if anyone can throw any light on the matter, please let us know ...
