| The second world war may well have brought an end to the mass unemployment problem, but thousands sacrificed their lives to defeat possibly the most evil tyranny the world has ever seem. On the home front, civilians of all ages and classes suffered as well, and above we see what one German bomb did to these houses in Ashburton Road, Southsea. |

Above: St Jude's Church narrowly escaped destruction, whilst many building around the area weren't so lucky.
Below: This photo was actually taken some time after the war, quite possibly as late as the sixties, and it shows
the area around Middle Street. With so much bomb damage in this area and so many tiny houses now considered
unfit for continued habitation, it was decided to bulldoze the whole neighbourhood and turn it into the Somerstown
that we more or less see today. |
